Why this situation is tricky
A thin cut requires striking the object ball on a tiny fraction of its surface. An error of a few millimetres on the contact point completely changes the object ball's starting angle.
The method
Break the shot down by first calculating the line between the object ball and the pocket, then working back to the exact contact point on the cue ball. Keep the stroke short and precise rather than long: on a thin cut, the precision of the aiming point matters more than power.
In blackball, the size of the balls leaves a little more margin on the contact point. In snooker, the smaller balls and narrower pockets reduce that margin: a poorly calculated thin cut is almost always missed.
What repetition changes
Calculating the contact point becomes automatic with repetition. The more you repeat the same thin cut, the faster your eye identifies the correct angle, even before you get into position.
